Social Media and Instructional Design

The landscape of social media has evolved dramatically since the days of Xanga, Myspace, and early Facebook. What began as a space for personal connection has transformed into a powerful tool for communication, collaboration, and learning. Today, educators are leveraging social media to engage with students beyond the classroom, while institutions use these platforms to connect with broader audiences beyond their campuses.

The integration of social media in education offers numerous benefits — from enhancing engagement and accessibility to fostering collaboration and creativity. Social media now extends far beyond traditional platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter); it also includes microblogging and interactive digital spaces that allow students and instructors to connect, adapt, and share their experiences in real time.

As this digital integration grows, it raises an important question: where should educators draw the line — or should there be one at all?

Below is my written reflection on the emerging role of social media in the modern classroom.
